I was tasked with creating the invitations for our annual marketing BBQ and the theme was a Hawaiian luau. I was provided with all text, and I had free creative range for the project. The biggest challenge I faced was adding the attendee’s names on the front (English) and Back (French) with Design Merge.
I always start off by placing the text on the document and organizing it based on hierarchy. Then I went onto Google and Pinterest for inspiration (see left image). While doing research, I noticed a few key elements throughout other designs, like tropical flowers/greenery, tiki statues and beachy vibes, so I took notes of that while doing my design. I also went onto Dafont.com to find a 100% free Hawaiian style font that would fit perfectly with the theme. I created the entire design in Illustrator with the help of their Text to Vector Graphic feature.
Once the design was complete, I exported it as an .eps and brought it into InDesign. This is where I used Design Merge and Excel to automatically batch fill the name field of each invitation. There were 60 unique bilingual invitations made for the entire marketing team.
I am very proud of this project because I created a physical product from scratch with no revisions from my higher ups. Even though this project was internal, it’s still one of my favourites. I had a lot of positive feedback from coworkers, and the BBQ was a success!
